Agency of Women of Color in Computing: Strategies for Persistence and Success
Computing is a discipline in which women, especially women of color, are severely underrepresented. Drawing upon data from over 20 interviews with women of color students and professionals in computing, this talk illuminates how women of color are innovative agents in the strategies they utilize to navigate and persist in their discipline. Strategies include: drawing upon their unique perspectives and experiences; using peer networks to combat isolation; seeking out counterspaces to nurture whole selves; utilizing “soft” skills; and engaging in activism. The talk concludes with a discussion of actions institutions can take to further promote the recruitment and retention of women of color, which will lead to broadened participation in computing.
