TERC Insights Featured in Brighterly’s New Guide to Early Math Development

TERC Curriculum Developer, Megan Murray, was recently featured in a comprehensive early mathematics guide published by Brighterly, titled What Is Subitizing? Meaning, Examples & Types.

The article explores the critical role subitizing, the ability to instantly recognize a small quantity of objects without counting them one by one, plays in building foundational number sense and mental arithmetic skills in young children.

In the feature, Murray shares actionable advice for educators and parents on how to distinguish between a child who is subitizing and one who is still relying on sequential counting:

“If students are pointing to each dot or in the air, they are likely counting by 1s. Similarly, if they take more than a moment or two to respond, they are likely counting. Kids who are subitizing successfully often respond very quickly, and say things like ‘I just know it’s 6!’”
