Presentation Title: From Brain Signals to STEM Pathways: Mixed-Methods Findings from the NeuroVivid Project

Abstract: Neurodivergent youth remain underrepresented in STEM pathways, in part because many learning environments do not fully recognize diverse cognitive strengths or provide accessible entry points into emerging fields. NeuroVivid addresses this challenge through a co-designed brain-computer interface (BCI) maker experience in which middle-school learners explore brain activity, neurocognitive variation, circuits, coding, and human-computer interaction while building and using simple EEG-based tools. This poster will present mixed-methods findings from NeuroVivid, an inclusive learning intervention designed with and for neurodivergent youth.

The study examines whether participation in NeuroVivid is associated with changes in STEM interest, STEM identity, and related indicators of engagement and belonging, while also identifying design features that support meaningful participation in neurotechnology learning. Quantitative analyses draw on pre/post measures administered to camp participants. Qualitative analyses of observations and interviews examine how youth experience accessibility, agency, collaboration, and connections between brain science and possible STEM futures.

Together, these analyses illuminate how co-designed neurotechnology experiences may broaden participation in STEM by making neuroscience personally meaningful, socially supportive, and hands-on for neurodivergent learners. The findings will contribute evidence about the educational potential of BCI maker experiences and offer practical guidance for designing mind-brain-education environments that affirm neurodivergent learners’ strengths while supporting interest in future STEM pathways.
