Biomimicry: Science + Engineering Design Inspired by Nature!
Description: Come and appreciate nature’s creativity! Biomimicry, or using inspiration from nature to solve problems, is an engaging way to integrate science and engineering. In this session, we will complete a biomimicry design challenge to build a flinging device. Participants will conduct a structure-function analysis of “inspiration” organisms, and then engineer a prototype based upon this analysis. We will show classroom examples of biomimicry projects, and share a biomimicry lesson plan as well as ideas about integrating robotics and CAD into the lesson. This hands-on session is part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation.
Presenters: Michael Cassidy, Kerri Krawczyk, Beth Travers, Brian Sheehan, & Kristen Wendell
