Mathematics and Language: Recommendations for Equitable and Effective Math Instruction for Multilingual Learners

Description: This talk presents research-based recommendations for effective and equitable mathematics instruction for multilingual learners. It will summarize what research says about effective math teaching for multilingual learners. A video from a 3rd grade classroom will be used to illustrate recommendations for supporting multilingual learners in elementary math classrooms.

Dr. Judit Moschkovich is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Mathematics Education in the Education Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She uses socio-cultural approaches to study mathematical learning and mathematical discourse. Her publications have documented the assets and strengths bilingual Latine students utilize during classroom mathematical discussions. She uses these examples to contradict the deficit views of these students as mathematics learners. She is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA, 2018) and received the 2019 Distinguished Scholar Award, Special Interest Group for Research in Mathematics Education (SIG-RME) in AERA. Originally from Argentina, she came to the U.S. at age 14; Spanish is her first language.
