(1118) Interweaving Equitable Participation and Deep Mathematics: Collaboration to Support Student Agency

Description: “I have an idea, and my partners have ideas, and together we have one big idea.” This third grader is naming an essential aspect of her mathematics class: a commitment to the development of collective mathematical agency (Aguirre et al., 2024). When classmates collaborate, they can dig deeply into complex mathematics—noticing patterns and developing conjectures—while coming to understand the value of each student’s contributions to the building of challenging mathematical ideas.

Presenter: Dr. Susan Jo Russell
Time: 9:30-10:30 am
Location: International Salon 4

(2519) Encouraging All Students’ Voices in Small Group Work: Fostering Equitable Participation through Reflective Practices

Description: Small group work provides students opportunities to: collaborate, share ideas, and learn from others. How students participate and interact can impact their learning and mathematical identities. We will explore how coaches and teachers can support equitable participation in small group work through evidence-based reflection and asking students about their participation and by taking action based on what they learn. We will examine reflection tools and discuss examples of teachers and students engaging in reflective practices.

Time: 12:45-1:45 pm
Location: International Salon 5

335: Seeing Ourselves, Seeing Others: Activities that Support Student Identity and Agency in Mathematics

Description: Students need to see themselves, their families, and people in their communities-as well as those from other communities-as doers of mathematics. Participants will consider sequences of related classroom activities, Excursions, that provide students with the opportunity to uncover their diverse competencies, experiences, ideas, and interests while applying grade-level mathematics to new contexts that expand their views of their relationship to mathematics in the world.
