In this early stage Design and Development study, we propose to build on an early version of the Innovate to Mitigate Challenge, funded by an exploratory DRK-12 grant, that successfully demonstrated student learning. Our findings indicate that Challenges such as this have the potential to enlarge the “ecosystem” of learning environments in the formal education system. In two challenges, teams worked both within the classroom and extensively on their own time out-of-school. Evidence of learning, motivation, and persistence, and the enthusiasm of participants and coaches, convince us that the Challenge is highly worthy of further development and investigation.
