You\u2019ll identify learning goals that build toward the target core idea, and eliminate learning goals and experiences that don\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"is-style-highlight wp-block-heading\" id=\"Session2-StudyGuide\"><strong>Study Guide<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Download\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/PLC2_StudyGuide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pdf version of this Study Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prepare<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; To prepare to analyze your classroom learning experiences, review an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/CoreIdeasPlanningTool_ex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Example Target Core Ideas Planning Tool<\/a>\u00a0for Investigations 10-12 in the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0grade curriculum\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/inquiryproject.terc.edu\/curriculum\/curriculum5\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Investigating Water Transformations<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a. This curriculum focuses on the DCI Matter and Its Interactions.\u00a0 Use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/CoreIdeasPlanningTool_ex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Example Planning Tool<\/a>\u00a0to find which of the components of the DCI were identified as targets for the 3-investigation sequence. \u00a0The components of the DCI addressed in grades 3-5 are listed in the NGSS under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/5-PS1-Matter-and-Its-Interactions-_-Next-Generation-Science-Standards.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0grade standards for Matter and Its Interactions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>b. With the core idea targets in mind, the next step is to identify learning goals that contribute to students\u2019 understanding of the DCI&#8211; and omit those that do not. \u00a0On the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/CoreIdeasPlanningTool_ex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Example Planning Tool<\/a>, find the learning goals that we found in the Teachers\u2019 Guide for Investigations 10-12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use the Planning Tool<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Find the standards for the DCI that your curriculum addresses. (See the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/next-generation-science-standards\" target=\"_blank\">NGSS<\/a>.)<\/li><li>Complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/CoreIdeasPlanningTool.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Target Core Ideas Planning Tool (docx)<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: You can look at a single lesson, one or more sequences of learning experiences, or an entire curriculum unit through the lens of a DCI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discuss in Your PLC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your colleagues, share your filled out&nbsp;<em>Target Core Ideas Planning Tool. &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grapple with questions.&nbsp; Provide feedback and support.
