In this session, you look at your curriculum through the lens of a DCI. You\u2019ll identify sequences of curriculum learning experiences that build toward the overarching learning goal.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"is-style-highlight wp-block-heading\" id=\"Session1-StudyGuide\"><strong>Study Guide<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Download\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/PLC1_StudyGuide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pdf version of this Study Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prepare<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 To prepare to analyze your curriculum, review an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/SurveyPlanningTool_ex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Example Survey the Curriculum Planning Tool<\/a>\u00a0for the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0grade curriculum\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/inquiryproject.terc.edu\/curriculum\/curriculum5\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Investigating Water Transformations<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The first step is to use the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/next-generation-science-standards\" target=\"_blank\">NGSS<\/a>\u00a0to identify the Disciplinary Core Idea (DCI) that is the focus of the curriculum. This curriculum focuses on\u00a0<strong>Matter and Its Interactions<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Notice the overarching learning goal (\u201cbig idea\u201d) that was identified for\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/inquiryproject.terc.edu\/curriculum\/curriculum5\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Investigating Water Transformations<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0This is the chunk of the DCI that the curriculum addresses.<\/li><li>On the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/SurveyPlanningTool_ex-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Example Planning Tool<\/a>, the learning experiences and understanding goals that build toward the big idea are listed for each section of the curriculum. Any activities and understanding goals that do not build toward the overarching learning goal are omitted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use the Planning Tool<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Find the standards for the DCI that your curriculum addresses. (See the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/next-generation-science-standards\" target=\"_blank\">NGSS<\/a>.) You\u2019ll find components of the DCI listed under the performance expectations. (You can find descriptions of how each DCI develops from K-12 in the<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog.php?record_id=13165\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Framework<\/em>.<\/a>)<\/li><li>Use the curriculum\u2019s front matter and lesson headings and introductions to identify the overarching goal and sequence of learning goals and activities.<\/li><li>Complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/inquiryngss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/01\/SurveyPlanningTool.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Survey the Curriculum Planning Tool (docx)<\/a>.<br><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discuss in Your PLC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your colleagues, share your filled out\u00a0<em>Survey the Curriculum Planning Tool.<\/em> Grapple with questions.\u00a0 Provide feedback and support.
