Session 5: Focus on Making Meaning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Goal for this session<\/em><\/strong>:  NGSS Practices require social interaction and discourse as everyday classroom activities. In this session, you will plan full class discussions where students share their thinking and reasoning as they make sense of their classroom work.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Get to know the\u00a0Make Meaning Discussion Planning Tool (docx)<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>Study the\u00a0Example (pdf)<\/a><\/em>\u00a0of a filled-in tool that was used to design the make meaning discussion for\u00a0Investigating Water Transformations\u00a0<\/em>Investigation 4<\/a>.<\/li>
  2. View the\u00a0Talk Science<\/em>\u00a0video\u00a0Why is Talk Important<\/em><\/a>?<\/em><\/li>
  3. Find the\u00a0Talk Science Primer<\/a><\/em>, a good source for digging deeper, now or later.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Use the Planning Tool<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Select a lesson from your current curriculum.<\/li>
    2. What aspect of students\u2019 work will benefit from discussion?  Would the purpose of the discussion be to elicit ideas? construct explanations? analyze or interpret data? Or to consolidate learning by discussing what they did, why they did it, and what they found out?<\/li>
    3. Complete the Make Meaning Discussion Planning Tool<\/em> (docx)<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Discuss in Your PLC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
