They cost energy to build, heat, cool, and light, but they also represent one of the easiest, most straightforward ways to conserve energy. From construction to insulation, to window placement, to geothermal heat pumps, there are myriad ways to lower the energy cost of buildings, saving both money and emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2013\/08\/130802132207.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Bio-inspired window design<\/a><\/strong><br>Scientists <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2013\/08\/130802132207.htm\" target=\"_blank\">mimic biological temperature control systems<\/a> to develop windows that keep heat in during the winter, and cool things off in the summer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/energy.stanford.edu\/news\/new-way-harness-waste-heat\" target=\"_blank\">Harnessing waste heat<\/a><\/strong><br>Researchers at Stanford University and MIT have found a new way to harness waste heat\u2014heat produced as a by-product of industrial processes or electricity generation. One-third of all energy consumed in the United States ends up as low-grade waste heat . <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/energy.stanford.edu\/news\/new-way-harness-waste-heat\" target=\"_blank\">A new battery<\/a> harnesses waste heat in a four-step process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Mitigation Ideas: Carbon Capture and Sequestration\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbon capture and sequestration refers to the process of capturing carbon dioxide and storing it in a place permanently, usually underground. It has usually been used at sites such as a cement factory that produces a lot of carbon dioxide as waste. Another strategy uses \u201cbiochar\u201d to capture and sequester carbon in the soil, at the same time enriching the soil for agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>1.<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/external-wiki.terc.edu\/display\/innovate2\/Direct+Carbon+Capture\"><strong>Direct Carbon Capture<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Direct carbon capture refers to using man-made machines, catalysts, or other techniques to pull in air and filter out CO2. At this point in time, there is no efficient, effective way to do this, and &nbsp;we do not have machines capable of removing CO2 from the atmosphere on any meaningful scale. Meanwhile, some advances in this technology have been made:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/prospects-for-direct-air-capture-of-carbon-dioxide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plastic resin that absorbs carbon from the air<\/a><\/strong><br>Researchers at Colombia University developed a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/prospects-for-direct-air-capture-of-carbon-dioxide\/\" target=\"_blank\">material that aggressively absorbs carbon<\/a> and can release it again when exposed to water, making the material potentially re-useable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeffkart\/2019\/02\/23\/carboncure-technology-says-goodbye-to-carbon-dioxide-hello-to-greener-concrete\/?sh=1ed267097311\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Concrete that stores carbon<\/strong><\/a><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeffkart\/2019\/02\/23\/carboncure-technology-says-goodbye-to-carbon-dioxide-hello-to-greener-concrete\/?sh=1ed267097311\" target=\"_blank\">CarbonCure<\/a> collects CO2 from industrial processes and stores it in concrete.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/innovatetomitigate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2021\/03\/dark-green.png\" alt=\"Green Leaf\" class=\"wp-image-610\" width=\"76\" height=\"23\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/innovatetomitigate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2021\/03\/dark-green.png 305w, https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/innovatetomitigate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2021\/03\/dark-green-300x91.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 76px) 100vw, 76px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/newenglandbiochar.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biochar as a Small-to-Medium Scale Strategy<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Biochar is created by burning organic waste in oxygen-free chambers and then burying it. <a href=\"https:\/\/newenglandbiochar.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Biochar<\/a> is one of many companies around the world seeking to increase the use of biochar as a soil enrichment technique that also takes carbon out of the atmosphere (through photosynthesis).
