{"id":528,"date":"2021-02-22T19:53:34","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T19:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/innovatetomitigate\/?page_id=528"},"modified":"2023-08-30T16:31:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T16:31:53","slug":"guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/innovatetomitigate\/guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Guidelines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Innovate to Mitigate competition occurs in three phases: Abstract, Investigation, and Submission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Abstract Phase<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Student teams submit a brief statement (250 words) describing how their idea relating to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/innovatetomitigate\/promising-ideas\/energy-efficiency-and-conservation-2\/\">biodiversity<\/a> can help mitigate climate change.\u00a0The statements are open for crowdsourced discussion on our Canvas community learning site. Students use feedback from peers to revise and resubmit abstracts<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideas presented in the abstract should be innovative (i.e., adapting an idea from someone else rather than just copying it). An <em>innovation <\/em>can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be an entirely new idea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build on an existing idea in new ways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use common materials in new ways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The abstract should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go beyond a generic statement such as \u201ceveryone needs to save energy\u201d to present a specific idea that will become an investigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clearly describe what is <em>innovative<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include scientifically accurate information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Describe an investigation that is feasible to execute within the time-frame of the challenge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The abstract does NOT need to make the case for climate change mitigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1WeqgW0_psANSTB4ltYNov5s0mBsVBiXt?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abstract Documents<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Submission Phase<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students work on their project, developing and testing their mitigation prototype or idea. Midway through the challenge time-frame, they post a progress report for comment on Canvas and ask for help in the community problem-solving forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1-lTkk-EPHgyYrxFCTVXMLKMOywUDdV9E?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Investigation Documents<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Presentation Phase<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students work on and then present their video (2-minute maximum) and paper (1,200 words maximum). The presentation provides details about how and why their innovation will reduce greenhouse gases. Participants, judges, and visitors pose questions and discuss the presentations. Final winners are selected by a team of judges from the scientific community.
