Promoting the Status of Women of Color in STEM: Strengths, Challenges, and Strategies
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010
10:55 a.m.
Boston Convention and Exhibition Center
Presenter: Maria (Mia) Ong (TERC)

How does the representation of women of color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) compare to their representation in the U.S. population? What unique challenges do women of color face and why? What particular assets do they bring to the STEM enterprise? What can be done to increase their numbers in STEM degrees and employment? To offer some insight into these questions, we will draw on our work over the last 15 years as a teacher, program coordinator of a STEM diversity program, and a researcher specializing in women of color and STEM education and careers. Our presentation will situate the issues of women of color in the contexts of 21st century demographics and national STEM needs.
