Cultural Context of Learning: Native American Science Education

Project Director: Megan Bang

Topics: Biological Science
Grade Levels: Elementary, Middle School, High School

Closed Program

Past research shows that rural Menominee children and urban inter-tribal children begin school with advanced understandings of biology and that they reason ecologically, much like practicing expert scientists. However, this conceptual advantage does not translate to school achievement. This project will test the effectiveness of an approach which builds upon the intellectual resources children develop in their everyday lives to develop critical academic literacies.
