Used Numbers

This series of lively, well-planned units of study is designed to provide elementary students with the opportunity to do statistics. Lessons involve collecting, organizing, graphing, and interpreting data in hands-on investigations drawn from familiar situations. Often working in groups to find solutions and make decisions, students engage in theory building, discuss and define terms and procedures, work with 'messy data', and deal with uncertainty. The six books in the series and the support material help teachers make statistical analysis a reality in the K-6 classroom. Each book contains a complete unit requiring approximately 15 class sessions, and the lessons move gradually from short, focused activities to extended investigations. The primary-level books emphasize counting, measuring, sorting, and classifying. The upper-grade books continue to focus on real data and real problems while carefully developing key concepts in statistics and graphing.
