Signing Science Pictionary

TERC and Vcom3D are using the Signing Avatar® accessibility software to create an illustrated interactive 3D dictionary of signed science terms for children in grades K-3 who are deaf and hard of hearing, evaluate it for usability and feasibility, and add to the Avatar lexicon of signs for scientific terms. For use by young learners in school and at home, the Signing Science Pictionary will be the first tool of its kind to bring science learning to life with characters who sign. This projects builds on research that led to the development of the Signing Science Dictionary (SSD)—a dictionary of ~1,300 science terms and definitions for grades 4-8. The SSD was funded in part by grants from NEC Foundation of America, the National Science Foundation (HRD-0533057), and the U.S. Department of Education (H327A060026).
