Signing Science Program
Supporting the Learning of Students with Special Needs
Considering issues of accessibility for a full range of learners has long been part of the development process at TERC. Beginning in the early 1980s TERC explored ways that technology could support the science and math learning of students with special needs.
Today those efforts continue in projects like Signing Science, in which TERC is partnering with Vcom3d developer of the Signing Avatar to help make standards-based science activities more accessible to deaf and hard of hearing students. TERC is also conducting research to examine how students with special needs learn mathematics best and how professional developments strategies like lesson study may help special education teachers improve their practice.
