Fulcrum Institute Program
Educator and School System Support
Professional Development at TERC
Quality curricula alone will not ensure that a school or district’s students reach educational goals. Teacher professional development and educator support have a powerful impact on instruction, school culture, and student outcomes. TERC supports educators through direct consultation with schools and districts, and through initiatives that reflect a sustainable, long-term approach to improved teaching and learning in mathematics and science.
Schools, districts, and staff—teachers, curriculum officials, support specialists, principals, superintendents—benefit from opportunities to learn more about factors that affect student outcomes. Teacher content knowledge, pedagogy, and school leadership are all influenced by professional development and technical assistance. Educators must work to meet the needs of a wide range of learners, including under-served student populations; TERC is committed to supporting these efforts.
Reaching Across Disciplines for Improvement
TERC’s school reform and improvement efforts embrace teacher professional development; efforts to change cultures within classrooms, schools, and districts; policy, curriculum and assessment reform; and collaboration among web-based communities of educators, researchers, and others concerned about the direction of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. This work has relevance for administrators and education researchers, as well as practitioners.
Rather than stopgap solutions, we raise deep questions about learning, equity, learning communities, and the interactions of policy with other imperatives. Our programs reflect our rigorous approach to supporting school change, and an attention to the ways different aspects of school culture interact with one another.
Our research in school reform encompasses research on large-scale mathematics and science reform efforts, as well as research on online learning environments. The published results of much of this work can be found in Research.
