CAMBRIDGE, MA–TERC is hosting one of ten Professional Development Institutes (PDIs) at this year’s National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The all-day institute entitled “We’ve Got Data!: Using Mathematical Representations to Talk About, Model, and Explain Scientific Phenomena” will be presented on Wednesday, March 17, by Sally Crissman, Senior Science Educator, and Sue Doubler, Senior Researcher, at TERC.
"We’ve Got Data!: Using Mathematical Representations to Talk About, Model, and Explain Scientific Phenomena” helps elementary and middle school teachers integrate data analysis strategies into their science teaching so students can look beyond data displays to reason, discuss, and debate trends, patterns, and the nature of the scientific evidence revealed by the data. In this institute, participants will work with scientific data sets they collect themselves; explore different ways to represent or display the data; and discuss which representations help to illuminate patterns or support an evidence-based argument. Participants will learn how grappling with data can deepen students’ scientific understanding and anchor scientific discussion and debate.
