Part-time (50%) position. TERC's Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) seeks a Formative Evaluation Specialist, for the Lifelike Virtual Tutors to support Authentic Learning project.

This Small Business Technology Transfer Phase II project (funded by the National Science Foundation) is developing proof-of-concept, Web- or CD-delivered Virtual Reality (VR) simulations that incorporate lifelike virtual tutors, capable of demonstrating and performing science experiments and communicating in written or spoken English or sign language, into two of TERC’s Science-athon online challenges for Grades 5-8: Marble Roll and Catching Sunshine. This research builds on Vcom3D’s and TERC’s use of avatars for communication of scientific concepts to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. Research will include evaluating the simulations’ effectiveness in supporting all students’ understanding of standards-based science content and process and attitude toward it, including those with special needs. We seek a researcher to conduct research and evaluation on many aspects of this rich and complex project, including front-end assessment for redesign of the interface and case studies that include students with cognitive delays, learning disabilities, English Language Learners, and hearing impairments.

The successful candidate will have a degree in science, knowledge of fundamental principles of energy transfer and forces and motion, and a Masters degree with several years of relevant research experience. He/she should have a demonstrated interest in researching cutting-edge instructional materials, excellent experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, excellent communication and writing skills, and the ability to work well independently and on a team that includes partners working remotely from TERC. The position will sometimes require travel. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
