EMPower Teacher Professional Development Workshops

The EMPower workshops support teachers who want to breathe life into the “remedial math” classes offered in alternative high school programs, Adult Basic Education and GED programs, and developmental college. These workshops encourage teacher-participants to think about presenting math concepts in new ways, introducing them to teaching techniques that focus on reasoning, communication and problem-solving skills presented in real-world contexts. These hands-on workshops are designed to be accessible to instructors of all “math comfort” levels.

Workshop offerings (based on the EMPower curriculum series) currently include:

  • Algebraic Thinking
  • Data and Graphs
  • Geometry and Measurement
  • Proportional Reasoning

For more information, visit the EMPower professional development website.

Contact us if you are interested in hosting a one- or two-day intensive session (20+ participants), customized to meet the needs of your program.

Online Science-athon

Teachers are needed to join the Online Science-athon, selected as one of Ten Model Project-Based Learning activities by WestEd. Designed to be engaging and fun, easy to integrate into teaching, and instructive, the challenges include: Marble Roll (force and motion), How Tall Am I? (heredity), and Catching Sunshine (solar energy). Each challenge takes 10–12 hours of class time; involves data collection, sharing, display, and analysis; and can be done in grades 2–8.
