Teachers Needed for Usability Testing of New eMapper Tool

Currently seeking test teachers to include with a proposal being written for submission to the US Department of Education. The proposed 3-year project will develop a new tool called the eMapper. The completed eMapper will be available at no cost from the cloud for downloading to any Internet-connected device. It will be toolbar-based and intended as a means to quickly and easily individualize any material that you ordinarily use in your teaching (provided it is available in eFormat or has been scanned).

If you would like to be a test teacher, you will have the opportunity to help examine usability of the tool. Based on your feedback, the eMapper team will make changes and add features to the eMapper. Participating teachers will receive a small honorarium for their time and all materials will be supplied at no cost. The test will involve use of the eMapper (at least once each year) to create a few pages of content to use with students and provide form-based feedback about your experiences and those of your students. The first round of testing will be conducted during the fall of 2013-2014 and again in 2014-2015 and organized to fit your individual teaching schedule and time you have available. Subsequent testing may occur during the third year as dissemination begins.

Play Impulse!

Curious what the gaming world is all about and why students spend so much of their free time playing games? Would you like to experience how educators and game designers are bringing real science to online games? EdGE@TERC invites you to play the new online casual game, Impulse!

About the game:
Propel particles, avoiding destruction as you make your way to the goal! Take it fast, take it slow, just don’t crash! Designed to model Newton’s laws of motion, Impulse! challenges players to conserve energy while navigating through a sea of moving particles to reach the goal. At early levels, particles are simply responding to the force of the players’ impulse, but as players advance, they must contend with increasing numbers of “enemy” particles as well as gravitational and/or electrical forces.

Investigations Common Core Institutes and Webinars

This professional development experience includes a one-day Institute and three follow-up webinars, facilitated by the authors of Investigations. It is designed for district administrators, principals, curriculum coordinators, math specialists, coaches, and lead teachers.

The focus of the 1-day Institute is on using Investigations and the new companion materials, Investigations and the Common Core, to teach the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics. Institute participants will:

  • hear from Investigations authors about how the curriculum and the new companion materials align with the CCSS.

  • participate in sessions focused on the Mathematical Practices and the Content Standards.

  • consider issues of implementation at the district and school level.

  • receive PowerPoint sessions and resources for use at their own sites.

  • receive a copy of Investigations and the Common Core at each grade, K-5.
  • The one-day Institute will run from 8:30-4:00 in 3 locations: October 28, 2011: Boston (MA);November 4, 2011: Charlotte (NC); December 2, 2011: Tempe (AZ). There will be follow-up webinars to accompany the institutes.

    Get Involved in Climate Education

The Climate Literacy Network (CLN) is a diverse group of approximately 90 stakeholders interested in the implementation and adoption of the Essential Principles of Climate Education. Organized and maintained by TERC, this nationally-representative group meets virtually once per week to share information on climate science and climate literacy. CLN’s activities include a sharp focus on educational contexts (formal and informal), but also include important discussions on policy decisions, impact in community groups, and ordinary citizens.

CLEAN-New England is the regional, program-focused arm of the Climate Literacy Network. CLEAN-New England is an exciting new initiative that connects high school students with college mentors around an understanding of climate change that allows them new educational and action opportunities. The programming in this initiative emphasizes how personal choices and actions directly affect the planet’s future.

    EMPower Teacher Professional Development Workshops

The EMPower workshops support teachers who want to breathe life into the “remedial math” classes offered in alternative high school programs, Adult Basic Education and GED programs, and developmental college. These workshops encourage teacher-participants to think about presenting math concepts in new ways, introducing them to teaching techniques that focus on reasoning, communication and problem-solving skills presented in real-world contexts. These hands-on workshops are designed to be accessible to instructors of all “math comfort” levels.

Workshop offerings (based on the EMPower curriculum series) currently include:

    Algebraic Thinking

    Data and Graphs

    Geometry and Measurement

    Proportional Reasoning

    Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

    Number and Operation Sense
